The Italian National Institute for Environmental Protection and Research, ISPRA

The Italian National Institute for Environmental Protection and Research, ISPRA, has been established by Decree no. 112 (25/06/08), converted into Law no.133 (21/08/08). The Institute acts under the vigilance and policy guidance of the Italian Ministry for the Environment. It performs the functions, with the inherent tools, financial and human resources, of three former institutions: APAT (Agency for Environmental Protection and Technical Services), ICRAM (Central Institute for Applied Marine Research), INFS(National Institute for Wildlife). The Department ÒState of the Environment and MetrologyÓ performs among others the following thematic tasks: monitoring and analysis of different kind of pollution (air pollution, waste, control of physical agents); environmental and strategic impact assessment; environmental national data base network - SINAnet; environmental reporting; local sustainability development projects.

The Physical Agents Unit promotes the development and application of methodologies for evaluation, prevention and control of pollution deriving from physical agents, noise among them. The Unit acts on the basis of specific requests promoted by Minister of the Environment, especially regarding the implementation of national legislation, through Reports and Guidelines for the analysis of the critical aspects and relative suggestions, requests by national public Authorities and promoted by public. The Unit contributes to the establishment of technical Standards, in cooperation with regulatory authorities and national research bodies.

The Acoustic group working in Rome since 1995s and has some acoustic laboratories (mobile one too) and a good experience in using software packages for outdoor and indoor simulation. A staff of ten persons carries out researches on environmental noise with an holistic approach: in particular with activities regarding measuring and modelling of environmental noise and facilitating advanced noise measurement networks also through national databases containing information about national noise activities monitoring and related data.
